FALAH is a multidisciplinary project of the European programme H2020. It focuses on family agriculture, food, lifestyle and health of the populations of the South Pacific islands of New Caledonia, Fiji, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu. It involves 95 researchers and PhD students from 14 teams in Europe, the Pacific Islands and Australia over a period of 48 months.
Family farming is a practice rooted in the culture of the Oceanian populations. For a long time, it has provided most of the food for people, meeting their nutritional and health needs while preserving the environment.
Today, family farming and food are threatened by the development of cities and the trans- formation of means of production and movement, which are profoundly changing the way of life and compromising people’s health. These transformations and global climate change place the islands of the South Pacific in a highly vulnerable situation.
However, agriculture, food and their health consequences are little studied on the scale of the Pacific islands.
The FALAH project aims to promote sustainable family farming for a healthy and balanced diet based on local products, a simple and less sedentary way of life, sharing and exchange of traditional and scientific knowledge. Moreover, the project aims ensuring the supply of urban and rural populations to accompany through the transition to sustainable food systems, food security, an active life, and people’s and environmental health.
Within the FALAH project, interdisciplinary teams will collaborate in interconnected networks. The project brings together scientists and professional actors to share knowledge, innovative methods and research results to support the sustainability of Pacific Island societies.
