In the past two decades, English-medium education (EME) has experienced a boost of popularity in higher education institutions in non-Anglophone settings. Nevertheless, to date, most research regarding the field of EME has focused on lecturers and their linguistic as well as pedagogical abil-ity, while students’ perspectives and experiences with EME have been rather neglected. As a consequence this research study is trying to contribute to the field of English medium education by investigating student perspectives and experiences in an Austrian setting.

This research project explores students’ experiences and issues using CALL (computer-assisted language learning) and MALL (media-assisted language learning) for their teaching of English for the first time. Equipping future teachers with the skills to integrate technology in their teaching has the potential to transform pupils’ learning experiences and initiate a technological turn in the Austrian school system. Helping student teachers to learn how to use digital media effectively in their own teaching can also play a crucial role in raising awareness for the advantages that using online tools has for all subjects, but especially for English and other foreign languages, as they can provide access to authentic materials and provide opportunities to effectively train all language skills. Furthermore, it contributes to the United Nation’s SDG 4.1 which aims to provide equal and free education for all girls and boys and to facilitate effective learning.

The great promise of CLIL is that it will enhance learners’ language competence beyond what is possible in regular language classes. In this project, we will review empirical research that has investigated this claim. While a first generation of studies tended to find positive effects throughout, recent results have been more mixed. Reasons for this shift lie in methodological advances, deliberate attention to the selection bias linked to many CLIL implementations, a wider range of CLIL contexts investigated, but also in different and revised conceptualizations of what language competence entails. Beyond language competence per se, studies on the effect of CLIL on learners’ motivation seem to find a mostly positive impact. Yet on closer inspection, it becomes evident that especially learners with low entry-level language competence report feelings of frustration and overload.
These trends in CLIL research are closely connected to current developments in CLIL practice, most notably its growing effort for greater inclusiveness. Thus, a re-evaluation of current research in this regard as intended by this project is warranted.
