In today’s globalised world, English is the dominant medium of choice in academic writing contexts. Clearly, mastering academic writing is demanding in itself, regardless of whether it is approached in an L1 (first language) or an L2 (second language), since it involves the adherence to specific conventions; however, learning how to (inter-)act effectively in an L2 in these contexts poses unique challenges to learners and this is what we seek to explore systematically in this project. Data was gathered from 50 advanced learners of English who filled in a survey at the beginning of the course EAP (English for Academic Purposes) at the Department of English at the University of Vienna and a follow-up survey after having taken the course. The findings from the qualitative content analysis (Kuckartz 2014) will be disseminated in (a) publication(s) in the upcoming academic year and they will be presented at (inter-)national conferences.
